Ok so, on my desktop system my RAM seems to have been engulfed by Overclockers RMA system for more than I expected (much longer) so I decided to start using my old laptop for a while. Now, its an old Dell, but is pritty stable at doing most things, Prime95 runs stable forever pritty much. But when I try to extract something, or compress, or do something which is pritty hard on the CPU the laptop just powers down (i have it plugged into the mains) without anything, just power off, thats it. I turn it back on with no errors, but then after some intensive apps it just powers off again. I haven't OC'd this or modded it and the temps on it are fine too. What could be the problem? Memtest finds nothing and Prime95 is fine too.

You 100% sure? I know if the air vents are blocked (e.g. where you place laptop, etc) heat can build up quite quickly. Other thing to check (though might be hard) is to make sure the fans are working, dust could easily stop them :(

Yeah good points mentioned above, i disconnected the CPU fan in my fujitsu siemens laptop as i got fed up of the noise it made and sometimes it would get stuck on even though the laptop was ice cold..

Anyway, if i tried to do anything too intensive or if the laptop got too hot, it would just cut out and switch off, so it could be temperature related. Try taking some of the panels off and just get a desk fan to blow some air inside and try extracting files again.

If not, might also be worth trying a different HDD in there, and possibly RAM as a last resort.

does eventvwr show anything?
go to system properties, advanced, setup and recovery settings, tick the top towo boxes for system failure, leave the restart one blank, and tell it to write a small memory dump
