Hi guys,
I've had my laptop for about 5 years now and it seems to be on its last legs. I don't use it much anymore, only for the occasional writing when I don't feel like sitting at my desk but my sister still gets some use out of it mainly for MSN and email etc. It's hardly been over-used.

Anyway, for a while now it's been randomly turning itself off, I completely rebooted the system to try to fix any software problems or viruses and the sort (my anti virus didn't find anything). Anyway, it didn't make a difference.

It seems to be one of two things; the fan is dead and keeps overheating or the battery isn't working properly. There's several indicators at the front of the laptop; 2 of which light up when A. the power is plugged in and B. the battery is re-charging. However, every now and then the lights flicker and turn off and the battery seems to stop charging. My sister had been using the laptop the other day (with it plugged in) but after a while it shut down, so she brought it to me and I fiddled with the plug until the lights indicated it was plugged in, I turned the laptop on and the battery was at 0%.

So, it could be that...

However, the other day I recharged the battery to 100%, left it on for a little while, went to 'try' to use it and of course it shut down. The fan?

So, it could be that...

But, if it were the fan then it wouldn't account for why it shuts down sometimes immediately after it's been turned on.

So, it could be both, or it could be something else.

My warrenty has expired so I wanted to ask you guys for some suggestions/advice/opinions before I paid some guy to take it apart and make me buy things I don't need.

Thanks in advance!

Josh

Try taking it apart yourself and clear out the dust in it to see if that helps.

I wouldn't pay some one to fix it, i reakon you should get a new one if you can't fix it yourself.

I'll have a look inside, maybe give it a clean, I just hope it's not the battery or fan. But then again, I'd rather it be the battery or fan than the actual computer.

I don't really wanna buy a new laptop though, I don't use it much and it's fine for doing the things my sister and I use it for.
