laptop dead?

Stripped my laptop yesterday to give it a thorough deep clean of all dust and crap that had built up, and upon rebuilding it, I discovered it would not power on.

I tried powering on with just the battery - no luck. tried plugging the mains brick in - no luck. tried the mains brick without the battery in - again no luck.

Now there is something that strikes me as odd - the brick when plugged into the laptop makes a loud whirring noise - but only when plugged into the laptop.

Could this be a faulty brick which has somehow caused damage to the laptop? I had noticed over the past few weeks that the brick had been getting quite hot.... has this somehow died?

Any ideas?

just your charger using a multi tester, if good then the problem could be with the either the power jack or motheboard..

I would strip it back down to mainboard and nothing else attached then plug the adapter in and if its ok just building it up bit by bit and keep testing until it whirs again, it might be just a bit of shielding or trapped cable.

when you have this stripped down, inspect the MB for any burn marks which would indicate a short. Also check the solder point around the power jack as you may have damaged them while cleaning

I've stripped it all back down and checked the motherboard thoroughly for any signs of burning.

Think I've traced the fault to a dead power daughterboard - although this could be a red herring.

When this daughterboard is plugged into the motherboard, the mains charger whirs and clicks like crazy. when I remove the board, the mains charger is silent....

It is starting to do my nut in so I've taken it back to the shop, and they are gonna part-ex it as spares against another laptop......
