Does it post? do you get the HP splash screen? If it does post and you are able to get to the bios you could try and run linux off a usb memory stick, this will prob indicate a hdd failure if you are able to run it.

If you have another windows laptop/desktop handy and a 2gb usb memory stick do the following.

Got Ubuntu download page

Follow the instructions.

Once done plug into "dead" dead laptop, if it comes alive after selecting boot from usb stick, its pretty much a given the hdd is goosed.

Hope this helps.

no, it wont post, pure black screen although the backlight lights up. also if it is a hdd failure does that mean all my stuff is lost?

Sounds like the laptop motherboard is at fault. However all you will need is a 2.5" external enclosure to recover your files (As long as the hdd is serviceable).

1. Just remove hdd from laptop.
2. Fit to 2.5" enclosure.
3. Attach to another desktop/Laptop via usb.
4. Recover your files.

Once you have recovered your files ( Downloads, Documents, Pictures e.t.c )

You can either try and get the Laptop motherboard looked at or just get a replacement laptop.

Just googled this laptop, one or two had the same problem all pointing to the motherboard or CMOS batter causing the fault.

Click on Second Google Entry and read

In all my time geeking l have never seen that kind of hdd connector, however l would suggest googling make of hdd and see what it throws up.

Btw l see it is still inside the hdd holder for the laptop, and that connector looks to be standing a little "proud" of the hdd, is it possible to remove the metal shim, l "think" that the connector is fitted to the hdd and maybe once off will show the correct connectors underneath it. l think that it maybe a sata to ide connector fitted to it.

Regards.

Right fella, looking here HP G6000 Service Manual

Page 39 would suggest you need to remove the the bracket and connector to get at the hdd proper.
