i just plugged the charger into my laptop and it instantly died and wont turn back on.

Ive tried taking the battery out and holding the power button down for 30 seconds etc. checked the fuse in the plug and thats fine. Just no life at all. It usually has a light to say its plugged in but that isn't lighting up.

what is this likely to be? have i killed it? :(

At a guess I would say your ac adapter (charger) is dead. Sometimes the light may still be lit on the charger but no power is going to the laptop.

If the laptop charger/power connected light on your laptop is not on when laptop is connected to the mains this is a likely cause providing the laptop isn't faulty.

If you have access to another ac adapter with the same voltage and amps as your laptop charger it's a quick test, if your laptop turns on it's your charger. This was easy for me, my mum has the same laptop as me. :D

For example my acer laptop is Output Voltage: DC, 19V ,4.74A , 90W.

BEWARE of using the wrong voltage charger as this could cause damage, so check your using the right charger. The voltage and amps will be printed on your charger.
Manufacturers use different voltage and amps for different model laptops so you can't rely on "it's the same make laptop as mine it must be the same"

I normally pay around £10 to £20 for a GENUINE charger for acer laptops they look less likely to fail after 6 months than the cheapest £5 ones you can buy.

I'm sure you have an idea where to look for laptop chargers on the internet :) Manufacturer websites charge more, Dell for example £56 for a charger for a Dell Inspiron 15 laptop.
