Hi guys.

My mates laptop is currently on Windows Vista and it just keeps looping at the loading bar.

I've tried formatting it, but it wont boot any disk from CD I've tried in it.

After about 7-8 times of trying, it finally booted using a Windows 7 disk but got stuck at loading files and then error with a message saying 'Windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device in your computer.'

The DVD drive is making some strange high pitched noise and it doesn't sound to good.

I'd tell him to go and buy a new DVD drive but don't really want him doing this incase it isn't the cause.

Any advice is appreciated.

are you sure its the dvd drive making the high pitched noise? if so, then it most definitely is the dvd drive, no doubt about it

Yeah because when there isn't a disk in the DVD drive it doesn't make this sound.

I've managed to get it boot again but it's incredibly slow on the 'Windows is loading files screen' and I'm expecting it to error again soon.

hehe yea a bit obvious that was :P and this one too, but its the only other alternative i can think of, have you checked the disk for scratches? think of the old cyclic redundancy check errors with damaged disks, but only without windows. its the dvd drive unfortunately.. my experience with shot drives, you MIGHT be able to install windows after a few tries, if you have the patience for that. i kicked the front of my case in when my drive wouldnt install windows, so i truly hope for your friend's laptop sake you're not like me.
