SuperDrive (DVD±RW/CD-RW)
AirPort Extremem Card & Bluetooth
MacBook Pro 15-inch Widescreen Display
1GB 667 DDR2 - 2x512MB
80GB Serial ATA drive (5400rpm
2.0GHz Intel Core Duo

I need to be able to justify this purchase at work and one criteria they've asked is how much an equivalent laptop would be! no easy to compare i guess...but help!

It would be used by a training centre manager for creating publications, presentations, image editing etc and alongside the fact it's possible it's possible to have both OSX and XP running...but some ideas on the above would be great!

Thanks.

I take it youve told them that is a laptop

This costs £799.99 from 'somewhere':

Hauppauge Digital TV Tuner
Intel Core Duo T2300E Processor 1.66GHz
667 MHz FSB, 2 MB Cache
1 GB RAM
100 GB Hard Drive
DVD ReWriter Drive
15.4" Widescreen BrightView Display
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
128MB shared Intel Graphics Acclerator
Includes 1 year warranty

Whatever you do lie and choose a lappy to compare that is way more powerful and therefore expensive becuase, unfortunately, an equivalent performance Wintel laptop would probably cost less. :(

For instance Asus Intel Centrino Dual Core T2400 1.83Ghz - XP Home (A6JA-Q024H) (LT-088-AS)

as listed here http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Asus_Notebooks.html is about equivalent but is also significantly cheaper.

Yeah, sorry..by laptop i meant Windows-based. :o

I would think this was more similar:
Asus Intel Centrino Dual Core T2400 1.83Ghz - XP Pro (W3J-H002P) (LT-106-AS)

- Intel Core™ Duo Processor T2400 - 1.83Ghz
- 2MB L2 Cache
- 14" WXGA Widescreen Panel
- 1GB DDR2 Memory 512MB Graphics Accelerator
- 100GB IDE Hard Drive
- Internal 8x DVD+/-RW Drive
- Intel ProWireless 802.11b/g Wireless LAN
- Built in Bluetooth
- Integrated Speakers
- Bag/Case Included
- Microsoft WIndows XP Professional SP2 Edition Installed and supplied
- Weight including battery - 2.20kg
- Dimensions - 330 x 32.7 x 247 (WxHxD)
- 2yr Asus collect & return warranty (Call 0870 120 8340 for Support and RMA request)

That is £1,119.95 ex VAT compared to the Mac @ £1,150.20 ex VAT (plus the added benefits of the above and a lot more i'm sure). The Mac also has the slight bigger/better screen.

I'm just trying to gather all the benefits in one place here. Appreciate the help so far!

If I were you I'd compare the Apple to something like a Sony Vaio. Sony after all probably make the most expensive laptops er I mean notebooks ;) , after Apple.

You would not want to put one on your lap believe me.

there is a pavilion laptop the same spec as that for 799 in a well known big shop

i know because..... i have one

edit.. 128shared graphics though, which isnt a problem really, not unless you specifically want a gaming laptop

You could try suggesting some of the thinkpad laptops. Something like a t60p can get expensive, which would be similar in spec except they're not a widescreen laptop:

thinkpad t60p - 2007-fbg
Warranty Period and Type: Three year (system battery:one year) parts and labour Customer Carry-in
Processor: Intel Core Duo processor T2500
Processor Internal Clock Speed: 2.00GHz
Front Side Bus Speed: 667MHz
Memory Std/Max: 1GB/ 4GB
Hard disk controller: Serial ATA
Hard Disk Size: 100GB
Hard Disk Type: Serial ATA
Media Device: DVD Recordable:24X Max
Graphics Chipset: ATI Mobility FireGL V5200
Max resolution on built-in screen: 1600x1200
Viewable image size (diagonal): 15"

~£1870 ex vat.

just a quick devils adv' type question.

why are you trying to rip off your employer by getting them to pay way more than they need to for equipment, when cheaper stuff will be more than adequate?

not being funny, just want to know how you justify it.

That way he gets an awesome laptop? :p

;) :o

 :) I'm not trying to rip anyone off. The Mac isn't even for me. They just like to explore all avenues and have asked that i spec an equivalent Windows-based laptop (amongst other things; like like to know their money is being well spent). I'm pushing for a Mac simply because of the advantages it has and what it can bring for the training centre (he's the one that insists on having it..all it does for me is provide additional support as all we have here at the moment are Windows PC/laptops) and to enable the manager to turn what is a shambles of a centre in to a county/country leading outreach centre. He's an avid Mac user already and can produce some pretty tasty things on them.

They offer training courses, a resource centre and travel to many other schools across the county.

That ok? ;)
