I've got a hp dv3-2310ea laptop and I'd like to adjust the fan speed/response, but can't seem to find a way to do so :(.

The laptop shutdown temp is 90C. Under load the laptop runs 78-80C. The problem is, when you first put it under load, because of the time it takes the fan to respond, it will peak at around 86C, before the fan brings it down and keeps it at 78-80C. That's a little close to the shut off temp, so I'd like to bring it down a little. I'd like the fan to respond and go to full speed a little earlier, so make it go full speed at say 75C, then hopefully it will just hold steady at 80C.

The bios is useless, there is basically nothing in there. It's out of warranty, I've seen some unlocked bios for laptops, but couldn't see if there was one for this and if it would even give the option :(.

Speedfan doesn't seem to work either.

It can detect the fan, but seems to have no control over it all. Also it can only detect it, if the HD4550 is active, if you are on the Intel graphics, it can't find it. The fan doesn't disable itself or anything when you are on the Intel one, it's still on and is controlled by the laptop, so no idea why speedfan can't find.

Any ideas? If not and I'm stuck with default are the cooling pads/stands for laptops any good? It's mostly on a desk anyway.

Like you have seen i'm pretty sure that you will be locked out by the BIOS on anything.

I bought an all aluminium cooling stand thing with a lowspeed 200mm fan on it.
Mine does the job very well. Was about £20 quid from here. I looked and cant see which brand it was.

You can make sure its clean inside maybe even replace all the thermal paste/pads with new decent stuff , but i think thats about all you can do.
