Laptop Fan Too Noisy?

Every now and again my laptop fan whirrs on. The trouble is - it's quite noisy - to the point that everybody notices it when the football is on the telly.

It means that I can't take it to lectures

, which is annoying as that's the reason I bought it for :/

Is there anything I can do? Should I use bog standard normal PC software to control the fan speed?

It's an Fujitsu Siemens Amilo PI 1505 laptop.

the laptop has a 'silent mode' where the CPU is clocked back and the fan speed is slowed down. The button should look like a fan. My Amilo has it too.

Really odd but the fan still comes on intermittantly - and it's still noisy
