Hey everyone,

My little girl has been saving her pennies for years, we cracked open her money box to the tune of £76 the recently... we were all pleasantly surprised.

Anyway, she's after a laptop to help with schoolwork and after a few donations from generous grandparents and a bit more saving we've agreed to let her have one.

So, here's my thoughts on specs:

* Needs to be the right size for her, about 13" I think would do
* Storage isn't going to be an issue at this age, so I was thinking 32GB SSD
* She's mentioned touch screen, but to me that's very low priority
* She'll need basic office software - word, ppt etc.
* Needs to be light and portable, not big and bulky
* Budget around £200

I was thinking about the Acer Aspire ES1-331 (this is the 11" model, but the same specs) but then I noticed the Asus Eeebooks that OcUK have in.

Anyone had any experience with these. Or had to buy within that budget for a similar age range?

Any advice welcome :)

How about a chromebook?

Use google's own docs, sheets & slides for office equiv software all of which auto backup online.. they don't suffer from the malware/virus problems that windows machines do.. and you can set up a supervised user account for her so you can control the websites she has access to.

Cheaper ones can be bought as older/refurb models often from the argos/currys ebay shops.

I know the ins and out's of chromebooks, I use them a lot myself. I thought about them, but for her first computer I want something she's familiar with... And so does the missus!

HP Stream 11? or shop around for an HP Elitebook or Dell i5 3rd Gen are mostly under £200.

I have an 11" Asus netbook which I bought second hand for £30. Dual core Atom, 2GB of RAM, 20GB embedded SSD.

It is fine for general browsing and desktop publishing, using Elementary Linux.

No need to go spending £200!

Not keen on the HP streams after having seen them in the flesh today. The favourite at the minute is the Asus Eeebooks (X205TA).

10 year olds need their own dedicated laptop for school work now?

Oh, she could live without it, but she often asks to use either the wife's or mine for many a different thing.

Hadn't really considered 2nd hand. Will need to have a look around. I've found the X205TA which seems to be the same (or similar) spec as you are mentioning for £160 devlivered.

I posted a thread about this type of thing, ended up going for the Lenovo IdeaPad 100S, can currently be had for £150 and from the little i've played with it seems pretty good for the money.
