17'' screen
Light as poss
High end as poss
Ideally for photo / video editing
No gaming
Want the best possible screen quality, wow factor etc..

G870 / W870CU? I'm in exactly the same predicament, wanting a desktop replacement, will be used for PhotoEditing and some video editiing, gaming, and mainly virtual machines, so needs a lot of processing power and a good screen.

I have read that the screen on a MBP 17 is nothing special

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Apple-MacBook-2-4GHz-160GB-7200rpm/dp/B000RY44WY first couple of reviews
http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/apple-macbook-pro-2009/4505-3121_7-33485018.html

and a few more like that. The NB is not acually for me, but have been told that they want high-end and mainly for photo editing, money not a problem.

I was looking at the following,

kobalt G870

EliteBook 8730w
XPS 1370
Asus Aw series

But i think the G870 comes out on top mainly as it has the i7, i just wonder how good the screen quality is, any ideas?

The only thing with the G870 is the weight, and the battery life are not potentially great, it is due to be release iminantly and so we should have an idea of screen quality etc soon. Looks like an ideal laptop for myself, but i'm waiting for the first reviews of the quality etc.

There should be some info on the forums here soon http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=423943

I don't think they are a competitor but Kobalt may well be so might be worth removing the link. The G870 is the same as the sager and clevo one i have listed.

The only other one I can think of might be the refresh of the Dell XPS Studio 16 which has a really good RGB screen and will be refreshed with the I7 porcessor soon. Let me know if you find any other compramises as I'm hunting for one too

Thanks for that.

@n30_mkii, i keep on reading very good reviews about the Dell XPS studio 16, and it has a T9600 which is very respectable and all the other usual features at about £1200 so i am torn whether i should recommend a higher priced laptop at around £1500+ . Even though i work with hardware we don't usually get to work with high-end, or the latest and best laptops so hard to make a choice.

I recently bought Sony Z series latpop, they expensive but the screen is crisp, and 2.53 ghz, 4 gig ramm ddr3, very light, but prob the screen is to small for u 13.3

I have to agree with a lot of the people here, with your budget and usage the 17" MBP seems the ideal choice, even if you dual boot windows.

Most laptop screens are TN and come from the same few manufacturers (Samsung, LG and CMO). I know that certain ThinkPads come with an AFFS (a modified form of IPS), but I think they are relegated to the tablets (X200) only, so 17" is out.

There is nothing wrong with a good TN screen - the RGBLED screen on the XPS 16 is pretty amazing.
