just basic windows office apps, web, il get more details tonight when he msgs me.

Edit: it appers the laptop i was looking at is now gone...might go to another retailer

I'm personally looking at the Acer Timeline 13.3", it's £400 and not that fast but very slim, 8 hour battery life, decent screen, lightweight and faster than a netbook.

It really depends what's most important to you, with sub £400 laptops it's either:

1. Slim with good battery life but slow.
2. Decently powerful with an OK battery but huge.
3. Fairly powerful and compact but rubbish batery life.

If you don't mind the latter two a certain etailer does an own brand laptop (it's actually a Clevo) with pretty good specs for £299 however you don't get an OS.

Could try Dell Outlet. Just ordered an Inspiron 1545: Dual Core T4200 @ 2.1Ghz, 4Gb ram, 320Gb HDD, Radeon HD4330 256mb dedicated for £343 delivered which I thought was pretty darn good.
