Going to sell my gaming rig as I haven't got space for it/don't use it much but still want to game, at the minute BF3 is the highest spec game I play so we'll aim for that.

1600*900 or above screen is the only real requirement.

Don't know how much I've got to spend till I sell this lot but I've got an old laptop to send back if it's HP? Sub £700 would be awesome though!

Same as me.. Selling the desktop due to lack of room..

I'm just about to buy this -

I'm really close to pulling the trigger after looking at loads of different laptops, this one with a AMD 6970M GPU is about as close to a desktop gaming rig replacement as I'll maybe get..

At £1100 isn't cheap, but its certainly from reviews best price per performance of any laptop I've seen.

There is a replacement /addtional model coming very soon, has a GTX 675M but won't have the VAT cash back from all accounts..

I looked at the Dell XPS 702x and Alienware laptops, the Dell XPS was affordable but the GPU looked weak, the Alienware looked to expensive for what they offered comparable to the Samsung..

That's stupid money! Could never spend that much, would feel guilty haha.

Thought I was insane looking at: XPS 17

The 555M any good? What about 540M?

555m will play bf3 @ 1600x900 medium/high settings or 1080p low/medium settings at 30-50fps.
The 555m in the xps is a good overclocker too.
Also for bf3 i would recomend a quad over dual for smoother play.

Dont touch te 540m for bf3, you will be play 720p low

i5-2450M
17.3" 1600x900
6GB2 Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz
3GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 555M Graphics Card

For £749?

I can wait a while if the 6 series M cards are due to replace these soon?

Buy the same xps L702 from the outlet at around £700 your getting 1080p screen which is a lot better in general might not run bf3 at that res but its nice to have for everything else, quad-core cpu and 8gb of ram.

My XPS 17 with a GT555m plays BF3 (single player) at 1366x768 on medium and I get a solid 52+ FPS. That's with the GPU overclocked to 735/1035. My CPU is the i7-2720QM.

I believe that ninja2000's numbers might be a bit high.

EDIT: I'm going the other way and might sell mine to get a gaming rig, hehe.

Ha ha, well I looked at the dell xps many times over, and just decided that the gt 555m wouldn't be good enough if I'm to replace my entire rig...

I've already got a two year old studio 17 and whilst its been good I to this day wish I got a laptop with a much better spec gpu.

Never will I skimp on laptop spec again.. I'd research more before buying the dell xps. Also maybe see if you get extra cash from selling your desktop.. I've seen bf3 on an ATI 5870 and my laptops 5650 and I can honesty say .... you can feel and tell the difference with a better spec gpu...

Agree though 1100 is silly money but I've been good this year lol

I get around that FPS at 16x9 with mixture of high/medium settings, maybe your having some driver issues my OC is also not as high as yours.

Any HP/Samsung/ASUS laptops worth looking at before I press buy for around the same price?

I would wait abit as the new 640 or was it the 635 is not to far off the preformance of the GT555, and the new 650/655 should be around the level of the 560 and hopefully the prices wont be to high.

My numbers were based on actual use in multi player on my old m14x which has same 555m and a quad. I tested a number of maps to make sure the reading were correct.
Just make sure you turn HBAO and SSAO off

I think "medium" enables HBAO or SSAO, I don't remember which. I'll have a play with the custom settings tonight :)

Is it worth looking for a laptop with an upgradable GFX card or is it far too much hassle?

I would without doubt get a laptop with the BEST GPU you can afford now, if you intend to game then the GPU is the one area you need to be sure with..

I failed on this last time I purchased a laptop. The Studio I've got can't have a the GPU upgraded, and this is the area I'm struggling with now.

Some laptops can have changable GPU, I'd skimp now in memory and try and find a laptop with two HD bays, then if you put as much into the GPU as you can, the memory and storage can be upgraded easier on a laptop then the GPU.

The 702 in my sig runs BF3 fine. Usually play on 1600/900 with medium/high settings. Sniper out with bipod. Pow, headshot baby :D

I still get blown away with just how good the graphics are. I love to just find a spot, scope out and watch others in action.

On another note, I fired up Dungeon Siege III yesterday with the xBox360 pad. Played well too :)

My work laptop has a 6400M which can just about handle Tribes Ascend with a super terrible looking config I found at 800x600 so might just wait it out for the 650/655 & ATI equivalents. I've got plenty of old games to play why tech catches up, just won't be able to play BF3 or finish Skyrim for a few months.

HP always have some trade in offer going & I've got a couple of old laptops I can use.

Very tempted to click buy on the Outlet L702x, it would be an impulse buy though!

I'd honestly try and see if you can get a laptop with a better GPU.

I know the 702x looks a good deal, I really did consider one myself, but the GT555M didn't come up all that well from the research I did, Dell are in fact using DDR3 and the 3GB GPU memory is stupid, on a 1600 x 900 res, how you going to use all that gfx memory? Even on the 1080p panel, waste..

I've just ordered the Samsung you said was silly money, but with the VAT back I got it for just over £1100, and its got a wicked AMD 6970M GPU with 3D as well, the 702x isn't anywhere close to this price per performance IMO.

It wouldn't be so bad if you could update the 702x GPU but I don't think you can...

You can buy my old Dell Studio 1749 if you want lol that plays BF3 at 1280 x 720p medium...?? :D
