Hi, I'm looking for a laptop for 3D CAD work. With this in mind, overall processing power is a big consideration and a large amount of RAM as well. Not too sure what graphics cards are suitable anymore, it's been a while since I tried to spec anything!
I'm hoping for a laptop but I might have to settle for upgrading my desktop, what do you guys and gals think?
1) What is your budget?
Up to £1000 preferably but I can be flexible if there is a good deal to be done
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
The bigger the better, 17"+ would be nice but it's not a deal breaker
3) Where will you buying this notebook? You can select the flag of your country as an indicator.
England/UK.
4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
Nope
5) Would you consider laptops that are refurbished/redistributed?
No
6) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?
3D CAD (Soildworks 2011 - http://www.solidworks.com/) and then the normal, internet browsing and word processing
7) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?
Will be on my desk a lot of the time but will be taken with me occasionally
8) Will you be playing games on your notebook? If so, please state which games or types of games?
Not very likely, gaming performance is not important
9) How many hours of battery life do you need?
The more the merrier but a minimum of 2-3 hours is a must
10) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?
Am not to worried about seeing it beforehand, as long as i can get an idea of the look. The most important would be that it has a good review from previous users or experts
11) What OS do you prefer? Windows (XP or Vista or Windows 7), Mac OS, Linux, etc.
Windows 7.
Screen Specifics
12) From the choices below, what screen resolution(s) would you prefer? Keep in mind screen size in conjunction with resolution will play a large role in overall viewing comfort level. Everyone is different. Some like really small text, while others like their text big and easy to read. Click here for Screen resolution information.
Full HD please
13) Do you want a Glossy/reflective screen or a Matte/non-glossy screen?
Doesn't matter.
Build Quality and Design
Build quality is important, I don't want anything that's going to feel cheap in my hand. It needs to be reliable
14) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
Yes, I would prefer something that is sleek but if I have to sacrifice some of the good looks for a better spec, I would
15) When are you buying this laptop?
Late January, early February
16) How long do you want this laptop to last?
3-4 years
Notebook Components
17) How much hard drive space do you need; 80GB to 640GB? Do you want a SSD drive?
Storage space is not really a big deal. A lot of my work will be kept on external drives. Minimal HDD is needed. A SSD would be nice but not really bothered
18) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a CDRW/DVD-ROM, DVD Burner or Blu-Ray drive?
Not really, I suppose a DVD writer could be useful but not too bothered really
Cheers for any ideas people have!
