Laptop for casual use.

Hello all, im looking for a laptop for a family member for mostly essay writing and movies. Only requirement they have asked for is a screen at least 17.5 inches and it lasts at least 5 years before slowing down too much.
Im not too savy on what to look when it comes to laptops, the cheaper the better for this but I dont mind spending up to 4-500 if its going to be worth it.
Any ideas?

At least 17.5"........ Would a desktop be better?

I said that to them but there adamant about it being a laptop and the bigger screen the better.

I am pretty sure you won't find a new laptop within your price range that has greater than 17.5inch screen and acceptable performance that will last 5 years. You could maybe look at Dell Warehouse to see if they have any returned or refurbished laptops that are suitable. I bought a 17inch Dell laptop from there about 8 years ago. It is still going strong
