Hi

Need to replace my aging HP pavilion laptop. Latest lightroom (I am on the trial) seems slow even with 8gb ram.

Don't wish to spend a fortune as only use the laptop these days for basic word documents and lightroom use.

What is suitable out there please. Not bothered about portability as it will stay in the house (no space for a desktop machine)

I am out of knowledge on specs these days so hopefully someone will be able to help here.

Like I said, not expensive please

Thanks

What’s the budget? I’m not familiar with Lightroom; does it use the GPU or CPU i.e. does the laptop need a dedicated GPU?

It is leans heavily on the CPU, GPU isn't very important.

A budget would be helpful, I'd probably look at a mid spec gaming laptop like the HP Omen 16 which is cheap at the moment:

HP OMEN 16 Gaming Laptop - 165Hz 1440p IPS Screen / 5800H / 16GB RAM / 512GB SSD

The QHD screen is better for LR use than the more common 1080P panel in most sub £1k gaming laptops.

There are sometimes offers on more creator focused laptops like the Ideapad Pro from Lenovo but not seen anything amazing in the last couple of weeks.

Budget wise. Maybe around 600 ish tops. Only for lightroom really as don't play games (have a ps5)

I'm just a hobbyist photographer

Something like:

Lenovo ideaPad 5 Pro AMD Ryzen 7 16GB RAM 1TB SSD Nvidia RTX 3050 16" 120Hz No OS Laptop

Would be ideal but it's about £700 currently. It has been cheaper so if you can wait a while it would be worth setting up a HUKD alert.

There was an amazing deal on the Yoga Slim 7 Pro last month too - it was half price and sub £600.

If you need to buy now there's the:

HUAWEI MateBook D 14 2021 Windows 11 / i7 11th Gen / 16GB DDR4 / 512GB NVME SSD / Space Grey

Which is good for the money but only a 1080P screen.

Some good deals on that are within budget:

  • IdeaPad 5 Gen 7 - AMD Ryzen™ 7 5825U | 16/512
  • HP Pavilion 14-ec0005na - AMD Ryzen™ 7 5700U | 16/512
Both are just over 600, but they'll last a while. If you want to get under 600 then look at the Ryzen 5 models. Remember to check the port support if you plan on using a decent external monitor.
