She wants a laptop for Christmas (or there about), so she doesn't have to use the desktop I built from older parts, which works fine but is 'upstairs' and is a bit noisy.

I also want to use a local shop, for easy servicing and support, so no online buy. She is in France, and I have these babies in my sights.

Asus UL30A (intel core duo).
Acer Aspire 4810tz (Intel Core duo).
Toshiba T130-11U (Intel Core duo).

All 600 euros, 13.3'' or 14''. The Acer also has an internal DVD drive. I'm a bit worried about the build quality of that machine.

Asus UL50VG-X. the 8 hours battery life version (800 euros).

That's a personnal favorite, but I think it's over-specced for her needs, but great when my sister or brother are around. It's also 15'' so easier on the eyes. 800 euros.

We'll all pool together some money, so 800 euros is a possibility. The UL30 and Toshiba would require a external USB DVD drive for spot installs, and probably also a mouse of some sort (maybe wireless Logitech).

The wifi has to be quite decent (it's an old house, with thick granite walls), but the wireless router can be relocated to somewhere more suitable.

I'm thinking battery life, dual core, portable, relatively well built, and problem-free (i'll probably do a clean windows 7 install to remove the crapware laptops come with).

I'm personnally leaning towards the UL30A, or the UL50vg if we can get the money together.

I was also considering a netbook (the Asus 1005HA seems an obvious choice), but I think these are too small for her to be comfortable with.

Maybe there are more choices to consider, but the shops are not great around where she lives. The have Compaq and HP stuff, and I don't want to get her a Sony. I'm also consider a MacBook but these babies are expensive and I know nothing about macs. She would an hour away from the city, with choices galore.

Cheers.
