Hello all

just need some help on choosing a £500 ish laptop for my Dad. Basically it will be used for everyday use i.e surfing, Excel and word. No gaming use what so ever. Would be nice if it had a SSD and a DVD on board

I am open to any suggestion ( that's why I'm here)

Thanks in advance.....

Just buy pretty much anything with an i3 or better for ~£400 where you can swap out the hdd in it for a ssd which should se you back ~£100-150 and you've got what you need.

Check out Chromebooks from Samsung, HP, Lenovo, Acer and soon Toshiba and Asus.
Cost: approx £ 200-£ 300 depending on manufacturer, screen size (up to 14 inch display), etc.

For surfing the web, watching iPlayer and some basic spreadsheet and letter writing, Chromebooks do it all. I suggest that for 90% of all laptop users, a Chromebook would meet their needs.

I have a Samsung Chromebook with a 12.1" display and use it as my main computer. It is everything I need in a laptop.

Chromebooks have SSDs. Mine boots from cold in 7 seconds and is fast and responsive. I do not use DVDs any more as I stream my music from YouTube and my films, books and tv shows from Google Play Store. Google created Chromebooks for everyone. You can buy them in the Google Play Store or at leading retailers like PC World. PCWorld usually has a section dedicated to Chromebooks, esp in their larger stores. I bought mine at Tottenham Court Road store.:
