So, I've just spoke to my boss and they've agreed to sort me a new laptop, but want me to provide what specs/models I would want (small business, so they appreciate I understand more about tech than any of the bosses).
I'm just looking for a bit of advice on options around the £750 mark. First one I've looked at is the Lenovo Ideapad 5 14 w/ Ryzen 7 4800u, 16gb 3200mhz, 512gb ssd which seems pretty solid and available for around £650 retail with Win10 Pro.
It's an area I'm not hugely versed in, so would appreciate any input.
Requirements are the following:
Cpu - tend to have a number of programmes running when at the desk, from large excel databases to bespoke software that can use multiple threads efficiently, hence my strong bias to the new 4000 series R7 chips.
On the same consideration, anything less than 16gb ram in a new system doesn't make sense in terms of longevity.
Win10 Pro, a given. Required to connect to work domains etc.
Very occasional CAD use for taking measurements off models, but nothing too intense and maybe 1 hour every week or 2, so doesn't seem essential to have a discrete GPU?
Screen no higher res than 1080p at this size, one piece of software uses legacy .net and therefore does not scale with windows settings. I'd honestly prefer a 16:10 or 3:2 screen, but that doesn'tt seem likely in this sort of range.
USB-C charging, an absolute must. Will be using a USB-C desk dock.
Then other minor things, a backlit keyboard would be very useful, biometrics too. Enough battery to last 6 hours without charging for meetings on site.
Thanks!
