Laptop Freezing

Hi,

My parent's laptop has all of a sudden started to freeze a lot when it's being used, usually when browsing the internet. What it does is freeze in Firefox, and you can move the mouse cursor around still but not select anything, and then after a few seconds, it totally freezes, and you can't do anything. After some amount of time, usually 2-5 minutes, it re-appears and you can carry on as normal.

According to my parents, the laptop has done this before, while at my uncle's house. He then recovered the windows installation to an older installation, and solved the problem. I've only been using the laptop in the last day for internet browsing, it's running AVG and windows firewall.

I'm no expert with laptops, so I'm not sure where to go with this. The laptop is an Acer Aspire 3050 with Windows Media Centre.

Thanks for any help/suggestions in advance,

Dave

Try running memtest to see if it's bad memory, also heat monitoring software... see how hot things are running. Does she put it places where it'd suck in dust? (carpets/mats/sofas/etc)

What temperature monitoring software would you say is best to use?

I think the laptop is used a lot on laps on sofa, so dust probably is an issue a little.

when my laptop did this i took the bck off and unclocked all the heatpipes ect there was so much crap in there i couldnt believe it.... sorted it though worked perfect after that
