Laptop GFX cards

Are you able to buy laptop graphics cards/chips ?

if so where from, cant seem to find anything really

You can, but it totally depends on the model of machine you're buying it for, and whether some enterprising soul has managed to source stock from somewhere slightly shady. I upgraded my Dell XPS a few years ago with a new chip I got off eBay.

But overall it's nowhere near as simple as upgrading desktop graphics - there are a lot more things to think about (power requirements, cooling, form factor etc.)

MXM was going to be the great hope for the industry, but it seems to be slowly fizzling out. You can find out more about MXM here.

I don't know about that. MXM 3.1 is going to be backwards compatible meaning anyone one a standard slot is going to be able to upgrade to the next gen of cards.
