was using my laptop, nothing to stress it and suddenly in went "plink" near the psu input/power button and lost all power.

Wont work either on mains power or battery, getting absolutely nothing - only thing I can see is when I plug the power brick min the green light on it dims and flashes slightly - I have tried another psu but the same happens!

Any ideas - I'm lost without my laptop (I may have to talk to the missus when sitting watching telly:D)

thats usually a sign a capacitor has blown, its under the heatsink fan, you can replace it yourself or a repair shop can do it, its a little brown oblong one nearest the edge of the mainboard.

mmm yea it might be a cap that has gone.. plink sounded more like hdd going off as you know when they do the bail arm moves back to its starting point, so you get a plink sound as it hits home. .

not the Hdd as I have had that out to get some data off it, and checked all the obvious whilst in there. The laptop doesnt power up and the light on the PSU flickers (bight/dim) when plugged into laptop - have tried a couple of PSUs and they both do the same.

well i wish you good luck with it as i hope you get it sorted..if you get eny funny smells unplug it qwick..the last thing you want is you house going up on flames.

the only thing can think of is get another charger and try it ......just make sure its the right voltige and polarity.. +- if its a volt under or over it does not matter.. if its 5 volts over or under it may not work of damage it.

Tried another charger which definitely was correct volt etc and still the same :( No funny smells etc, just no power and the light flickering.

take the panel off from the base, then 2 screws for the fan, and 4 for the heatsink you should see a couple of black components, then the brown oblong capacitor right on the very edge its about 6mm by 2mm. it might have a slight scorch mark on it, this it the capacitor that needs swapping, put a picture up if you can and i'll confirm which one it is.

the laptop has been taken away by the insurance company - they stated its a short on the mobo possibly not caused by the drop!!!
