Hi guys, I’m looking into upgrading the GPU in my laptop and obviously I need to go down the external route. My question is: external GPU’s use thunderbolt 3 to connect the card to the laptop, but my laptop does not have a thunderbolt 3 port, can I use some kind of thunderbolt 3 adapter between the eGPU and the laptop or does the laptop have to have thunderbolt 3 capability built into the laptop. Any advice on how I can achieve this upgrade would be greatly appreciated.

You can't add TB3 so you're going to struggle.

You can sacrifice an M2 slot if you have more than one but you'd have to cut a hole in your baseplate and it's an ugly bodge.

What laptop have you got?
