Laptop graphics problem?

I have a Dell M4400 with a number of weird problems with the screen which I think might be a graphics card problem.

On start up after the Dell logo the screen goes black and just stays black the entire time.
The keyboard lights are on and you can hear the HDD loading but cannot see anything on the screen.
If I attach an external monitor via VGA then I can only see the screen on that, the laptop screen stays black.

Other times when I start up instead a black screen, everything can be seen fine except everything has a deep blue filter over it which will suddenly turn to a bright pink filter then turn normal. After a few minutes it will turn blue then pink again in a cycle. Sometimes after the pink it will have a black filter so the screen is only just visible and very dark.

I have tried resetting the laptop, updating Nvidia drivers and trying a Linux Live CD but I still have the same problem.

Can anyone advice what it could be and how to solve it?

Thanks

sounds like a dodgy cable/connection if it works fine on an external screen.

it could be loose or have gotten pinched.
