Im off to uni at the end of this month and am looking at buying a laptop. My parents have offered to cover the cost of this, but arent willing to splash out at a really expensive one.

I am looking to use this laptop for uni stuff and also i may do some gaming (cod2, aoe3 mainly) on it. My question is what kinda graphics card would i need in a laptop to get reasonable performance in these games. Prefferably one that wont cost a fortune too. I have no idea about laptop graphic cards so any help would be useful.

Thanks in advance

Well, unfortunately, laptops arent designed for games as a general rule - getting one with decent performance in the games you mentioned will cost a lot more than a tower would have similar spec. Can you give us an idea of the budget?

Dell XPS ones are ok for a bit of gaming but not great - but they are probably the cheapest option imo

First off what's your budget? tbh I wouldn't buy a gaming laptop, battery life is poor. And you're unlikely to want to spend time gaming and just have a social life. You can do plenty of gaming after you've finished uni and working.

Look for a "office" laptop around £400-£500

You can pick up a laptop for £400 with Intel xpress graphics 200 in it and that will play cod2 but I dont think it will be very good graphics

Ive seen some HP ones with radeon x1600 pros in them for around £800

i got a asus (specs below) for 762 ill email you the linkage if you want

My dads being tough, ive asked him about a budget and he keeps coming back with 'find one for wotcha need and ill see if its an acceptable price.' But he doesnt know i wana game on it :P hes never really been happy with me gaming as it is.

Anyway if i was to guess a budget i'd say around £800 mark.

Ive found a dell with X1400 256mb hypermemory card for aroudn £770, is this card any good ?

Similar speed to the 7400 go in the pc fastwunz linked to.

Good on him! You're going to uni to study, not play computer games. You can get a decent office laptop for that

£500 inc vat.

To squiffy, i was asking for advice, not your opinion on whether i should play games, thanks.

And there is a thing called 'spare time'.

I don't know if HP does the same thing here in the UK but I configured a university laptop for my friend from HP and he got a great deal because of a student discount.

It was a DV5000T.....Core Duo 2.0 ghz, 2gb ram, Geforce go7400 128mb....not the best laptop video card but it's alright.

sempron lol might as well get a celeron lololololololol

...nahh there good on batterylife like not to shabby the mobile versions like all is good

Asus laptops are generally very good. Have 2 mates with them, and both are pleased. I have a HP, 14" WS .. graphics are pants ... but I don't game. Nice, though.

don't get confused with Acer though, like some shops do ... don't buy Acer, whatever you do, if it goes wrong it's a nightmare.

That is a great price, although I would pay a bit extra and get it upgraded to 1GB, ideally at time of purchase (all slots could be used that means buying 1GB and selling 512MB)
