So I dropped my laptop, xps m1530, won't boot properly, I tried reseating the drive but no luck. I have a spare 2.5" drive that I can replace it with, my question is, this drive is already filled with movies, music etc, do I need to reformat it before I put in the laptop or will it be automatically formatted when windows recognises the new drive.

Cheers,
Ive

You have to manually format it. Unfortunately not all laptops come with the windows cd though. If you have or can get one, you go into the bios change boot order so DVD drive is before HDD and the machine will boot the cd. During the install process you can select to format the HDD
