Are all laptop hard drives the same? Say like if I wanted to take out my Hp hard drive and put it into a Dell or Asus laptop will it work? or would I have to get the same make laptop for it to work? and also would I have to do some sort of configuration on the system when hard drives are put into a different computer?

The hard drive will almost certainly fit. It will be a 2.5in size, and SATA (unless we're talking an antique laptop).

Windows will be a whole other ball game, needed drivers will need installing, unneeded drivers will need uninstalling, and Windows may not even boot.

You have no guarantee even with the same brand - moving from Dell ABC laptop to Dell XYZ. You are safest reinstalling windows and drivers.

If you are wanting to take your documents off the old drive, you can buy a caddy to put it in so you can copy your old docs from it.

It depend on your laptop whether it very old, few years old or brand new laptops and ultrabooks.

Very old laptops with IDE connector used 2.5 inch IDE hard drive.

Few to 8 years old laptops with SATA connector used 2.5 inch SATA hard drive with either SATA cable or SATA to Molex cable.

Many modern laptops and ultrabooks used either mSATA card or M.2 SATA finger stick.
