Looking for a decent laptop to play games on. Needs to last a fair while. Prefer a 17" screen and 1080p would be a nice bonus if possible.

Just not sure what hardware I need.

Do I need a quad-core for it to last more than a year really as a gaming laptop?
What kind of GPU do I need? I was thinking of a 650m or better.
Is that hybrid HDD from Seagate, the 750gb one any good?

Anything else I need to know?

Also, yes I know a desktop is superior, however I need something small. Not a small form factor either, can't fit a monitor as well with me.

*Sorry can this be moved. Just noticed a laptop hardware section.

Done some digging and i've decided that unless someone says otherwise soon, i'll run with the Optimus IV with an i7 3610 QM, 660m GPU, 750GB seagate hybrid drive and the artic cooling paste. I imagine that'll do the trick well enough.

Notebookcheck seems to have a 40fps average for the 660m on high settings guild wars 2 also :)

EDIT: Does anyone know a way to make the intel HD4000 combine forces with the 660m for an even better gaming experience? It'd be a welcome addition if possible.

Have you check out the Alienware gaming laptops, they have real power for gaming. I work for Dell and like the M17x, have a look Alienware M17x which as the 17 inch screen that you are looking for.

I've had really bad experience with laptops. Bought an Alienware last year just to game. These stuffs heat up a lot after a term of use. It's now just lying on my bed being useless. So unless you really need mobility; I would suggest you to go for a pc.
