Laptop HD and DVD issue

I have an Advent 7009 with a UJDA720 cd/dvd drive and need to reinstall XP

1st issue, dvd wasn't reading disks right so found a newer firmware, it works in XP but BIOS says nothings there so this made reinstalling XP difficult

So instead I hocked the laptop drive to the PC and installed XP on there, put it back in laptop but it won't boot.

Anyone know why laptop won't boot the new install but also how to sort the dvd drive issue?

its possible that the firmware is not supported by the bios, but if its not reading i would think its the drive itself, which should be failrly cheap to replace.

What about the HD issue?

I thought I could install XP on the PC then whack it in the laptop and it'd work, have done this for PC HD's before.

HD issue kinda sorted

I found out an old cd drive from a Dell lappy had while back but again it's only detected in BIOS and my laptop BIOS has very limited options
