Laptop HDD upgrade

My father needs to upgrade his laptop hdd but doesn't want to lose his current data - what is the best way of upgrading and cloning his data.

I have a 3.5 inch sata hdd enclosure, are the connectors the same for 2.5inch and can I clone using usb?

Any advise gratefully received.

My fathers OS is Vista 32 home

SATA connectors on 2.5" and 3.5" are identical and connecting via USB should cause no issues. Acronis is the best imaging software I've ever used, but you can certainly find something for free that will do a simple clone.
