Laptop heat issue

Hi

I got Lenovo Yoga C940 for about 3 weeks now
it uses Intel Core i7-1065G7
with Intel Ice Lake-U GT2 64EU - Integrated Graphic ( Intel Iris Plus Graphics 940 )
always on Intelligent cooling mode

Even when am not doing anything , in conditioned room, the temp doesn't go below 45c
only once it reached 40c , but the normal 47-52c , when doing nothing or very light usage

when I was updating windows it got really hot , frying hot, once it reached 97c
and who knows maybe more, cuz on blue screen while updating i felt that temps so hot without being able to monitor

when i watch videos on dedicated app, like netflix it keeps the temp low,
but if I watch on browser, am using Firefox, it gets hot too
between 60s - 70s , and reach 80's sometimes. rare times jump to 90's for few second

I always keep the ventilation open , also one of the reason I picked this laptop cuz it uses 2 blowers
so i thought it will give better temperature

is this normal behavior for the laptops?
shall I be worry about the temps when doing nothing ?
what about the 90s, is this gonna damage my CPU?

I believe those are normal temperatures. Laptops generally run a lot hotter than desktops, and frequently have to throttle their frequencies to manage peak temperatures.

I am not an expert, but from watching YouTube reviews of laptops, that behaviour (and temperatures) seems entirely normal.

The intake vents are usually on the base of the laptop, so use it on a hard surface, not on your legs, or a soft cushion etc. otherwise it wont be able to draw air through the system.

I bought a laptop cooler to try on my Dell Precision 5520, works very well, in Warzone it was slowing down due to exceeding 75degs, now it'll crack on just fine. I was pleasantly surprised what a 15 quid item could make to it. I bought a tecknet model from the rainforest site if that matters, as it has usb pass through so you don't lose a usb port.

I have alianware 17.
Had it since 2013.
Since day one I had that laptop on a cooling base. With extra 2 80mm fans.
My temps 50c idle and around 70c full load.
I7 intel
Use to have ati 7950 but it burned down last year.
Now I have 980gtx.

It might help reapplying some better quality TIM, I did this on a PCS custom laptop and took a massive chunk of heat away, they had used that cheap and nasty white thermal compound!!!

I'd be more annoyed at the noise the fans must be making when you only have a browser open.

I had a Sony VAIO with the 1st gen i7 and hated using the thing. Replacing the TIM and blowing dust out of the heatsink would help for a few months but it was never silent.

If you bought online you check if you are still within a return period, you might be able to return it for another model. Also check on Lenovo user forums to see if others have the same issue and if they've found a fix.

If all you need the laptop for is browsing and media then maybe get something without an i7 or try a Ryzen which runs cooler or even a fanless Chromebook.

thank you all for replying

@Mujja , sadly am out of returning period, and the fans r so quite , even in high temps so this is not an issue,
I will use it more than browsing , but this is what I only do these days.

i've been through many reviews of many laptops before choosing this one
most of the laptops suffer from heat issue as they r getting thinner and smaller which leaves tiny space for air flow
even for this one seen so many review , no body complained about the temps

so is it as @martin363 said this normal temps for laptop?
and are they safe?

am thinking about changing the paste , but is it really gonna help or just 2-3C less?

the cooler is good idea but only when am home, when am out I won't carry it with me.

I'm interested in fans speed at high temperatures.
My alien does about 2500 rpm at around 70c
But it goes up to 4k rpm if I remove my cooling pad.

U should try to force your fans to max and see if temps goes down to manageable 70c.
90c is never normal. It will not last.

90C is normal and it will last a long time. I see this all the time, for the sake of making things more sleek and portable the cooling systems are inadequate and they rely on the thermal throttling of the cpu to take care of itself. Macbooks are great at this but many laptops too. I always laugh when some laptops boast big mighty i7s and massive clockspeed when most of its life its performing like a low speed i5 due to throttling if any reasonable load is applied.

Damn this is sad. How can you keep it on your lap at 90c At those terms it's no longer a lap top. It becomes Desk top

It depends on the laptop size, processor and design. the laptop itself should not be at 90c, but often surfaces close to the processor can become warm / hot to the touch, typically the upper area of the keyboard, and sometimes the bottom. the hottest measured surface temps I recall seeing on YouTube reviews are about 45c to 48c.

Thinner laptops are typically harder to cool than thicker laptops, but it depends on the design and internals, a discrete GPU wont help.

As mentioned, the laptop processors are basically designed to run at or close to their thermal max, 90c+ and throttling is basically a design decision.
