Boss's Dell laptop has had a hard drive crash and cannot recover the data from it.

I don't have much experience with laptops its always been desktops.

My question is will I be able to open it up (warranty is already expired) and change the hard drive easily enough then re-install windows as it still has the product ID sticker on it.

It is a Dell Lattitude E5430 and the hard drive inside just now is a 500gb Serial ATA (Which I assume is the long abbreviation for SATA) hard drive.

I am comfortable and capable of doing it but as I say my experience has almost always been with desktops with the exception of replacing a keyboard years ago on a much older laptop.

What type of mechanical drive would fit and also would an SSD work as well.

Is there any issues to look out for when doing this?

Thanks for any advice

Remove the bottom panel, pull the hard drive & bracket out using the plastic tab, change the drive over, put the drive & bracket back in, put the bottom back on.

Couldn't be easier :)

Any 2.5" HDD or SSD with normal SATA conenctors will fit just fine.

I forgot to mention the need to unscrew the bracket, but you'd see that anyway. :)

No I did think this as well tried all the hot fixes and all the things on Microsoft site.

Windows is also definitely activated.
