Need some help finding a laptop with these requirements.

Had a look at the Lenovo G570 and Z575, but I don't think they'll have enough ommph.

Budget £1,000 max, excluding VAT we're in Jersey.

We were looking at the MSI GX660R but the reviews regarding the touchpad were discouraging.

Specs:
15-15.6" screen.
Bluy-ray
Number pad keyboard
Card readers

Performance wise, needs to be able to handle GIS, Image processing, mapping software for geological surveys etc

Gone are the days of needing the dedicated Quadro graphics, unlike 5+ years ago the gaming or integrated cards in most laptops were relatively dire at graphics productivity (the GIS, Graphics and CAD 3D suites) compared to the Quadro.

If you really feel you need the professional graphics kit a gaming laptop is not what you want.

That means a Dell Latitude ideally.

In terms of build quality I would only look at the Lenovo Thinkpads, HP Probook / Elitebook or the Dell Precision / Lattitude. I am assuming this is work related given what you will be doing and reliability will be at the front of your mind.

I am at a loss as to a good alternative here because although you could survive with the Intel HD3000 a dedicated graphics would be better in the absence of a Quadro. You could spec up a nice 15” Lenovo Thinkpad direct from their UK/EU site and there is a 10% code for them through quidco. However, you would need the W series or top spec T series to get the Quadro graphics and they will run at £1k + easily. On the HP Elitebooks you need a w designation after the product type to get the Quadro / workstation spec. Again £££.

The Dell Lattitude E6520 seems to come in at best overall value for the kit and level of Quadro graphics you get. Try to get a 4000 series NVS card if you can (this is available on the E6520).

Do you need a Blu Ray reader / writer out of necessity or, is that just a luxury? This is a big sticking point on a lot of business notebooks. Adding it to the Dells is a £350 option and it isn't available on the other brands that I have looked at. You could get an external bluray which is a much cheaper option

Could you go up to a 17"? If so you can get a well specced i5 Lenovo Ieapad G770 with ati 6650 grpahics and Bluray in for £799 including vat so £666 exc vat.
