Fiancee wants a laptop to replace her old desktop, So i'm going to help her buy one. Not got a lot of money to through at it so basically looking for something decent for as little more as possible.

She wants windows 8 and touch screen ideally (though touch isn't a must), it'll be used for doing her coursework on, browsing the internet and watching movies, but also some light gaming.

We're not looking for a gaming laptop by any stretch, just something that'll run older games at low/medium settings with good solid frame rates. She only really plays sims 3 on her pc at the minute, but does like playing stuff like Skyrim, Tomb Raider on the xbox, so if it was capable of running them on low it would be ideal.

Budget would be preferrably under £500. between 15.6 and 14 inch screen and have HDMI to allow it to be plugged into a larger monitor on her desk.

Looking at a Asus Vivobook S550CA @ £450:

Dual-core Intel Core i3-3217U @ 1.8GHz
6GB RAM
Integrated Intel® HD Graphics 4000
Touch Screen

Not a chance for playing Skyrim + Tombraider. Thats very overpriced for the spec admittedly touchscreen will bump the price up a bit.

for £499 you can pick up a pretty good hp pavillion 15-n083sa

A10
8gb Ram
1tb HDD
Non Touch

Yeah, i was hoping to get touch. Think to make windows 8 worth having it needs to have touch really.

I thought it probably would struggle, but was hoping someone might have been able to point me into the direction of something more suitable for not a massive amount more money. I'll check the HP one out anyway. But i think we might be better off just getting a lower spec laptop and moving the xbox 360 when she wants to play games. Unless anyone has any other laptops to suggest.

Ended up picking up an Lenovo Flex 15 with i5 4200U and HD4400, with touchscreen for £550.

Almost bought an HP with the same spec, but 14 inch screen, but the Lenovo had much better battery life (9hr over 5hr), and just looked much nicer.

Hopefully she'll be happy with it.
