My g/f's laptop died a minute ago, basically it's not charging, so it's either the battery or charger. As a laptop should run without a battery and only the AC adaptor i'm guessing it's that, but isn't it more common the battery is dead? If it was the battery, then how would I know?

It would work on AC but not on the battery.

Could be an internal fault, like the ac connector on the laptop.

It won't work on the AC, i'm just unsure as to whether it could also be a battery problem. It must be the AC.

Get her to give it a good blow. Then take the battery out and try blowing around the contacts too.

I had a problem similar to this with my lappy, the contact just wasn't good. Did as above and it worked fine.

funily enougth i just finished repairing an acer travelmate 2700, would only charge if you held the cable in a certain way, then it stopped completly. first i thought it was the contacts for the charger. then i found a thread on another forum, turns out its badly soldered. had to resolder the charger input onto the mainboard.

sorry if i've hijacked your post

Could be damaged wire on the charge lead too, the negative wire was all corroded :(
