Last night i was on my laptop just doing some work (as usual) and all of a sudden it just crashed. Since that crash it won't boot up it's just sitting on the loading screen (bar doesn't freeze) but won't boot into windows, I've tried to re-format it but using XP it says it cannot detect a Hard Drive, I've also tried using Vista but after the CD loads it just tries to boot windows again (even after setting HDD to boot after CD) So i'm at a baffle, Is the HDD dead (i did happen to drop my phone on it last night but worked fine for about 2-3 hours after that) Everything seems fine except the HDD doesn't seem to be picked up.

The Laptop is a Sony Vaio VGN-NR32S 2G Ram, 1.8 dual core processor, Nvidia 8400M GT Gfx.

Anyone with any advise would be very much appreciated. I'm at a loss with this one.

Thanks.

I am guessing that XP doesn't find the HDD because it is probably needing SATA drivers which the early versions of XP didn't have included on the CD. (I assume your laptop uses a SATA HDD)
Not sure why vista wouldn't work though since I think that must have the SATA drivers installed.

Perhaps try downloading one of those recovery/diagnostic CDs which have tools so you can test your HDD, Memory etc for any problems.

Not entirely sure, It just seems to click in (when i had a look) Didn't look like a SATA Port having said that my experience with Laptops is very minimal, Where can i get one of these Recovery / Diagnostic CD's?

Thanks for your time.

Thank you Phil and Smit, I can't boot into safe mode either it just hangs i've left it for a good 15-20 minutes (i know how slow it can be) and nothing, just sits n hangs.
