Laptop issues - Very slow / freezing

Hi,

I've posted previously about a similar problem with this laptop, but as I've been away from it, I've not really had to use it so the problem persists.

Basically, the laptop is really, really bogging down and taking an absolute age to boot up to windows. When it does finally get on and make the windows chime thing, it really struggle to play the sound, and takes about ten seconds to play a 5 second sound, so it's all cackly and jerky.

After a couple of minutes when the laptop is in Windows, it speeds up and pretty much allows you to do what you want with it, however it still struggles with sound etc, and does freeze up as well.

I've had a look inside and there doesn't appear to be any large buildups of dust, and I'm running it flat on a ventilated surface.

Edit:

If I try watching something such as a video, which worked fine a few months ago, will be all jerky and unwatchable. If I check task manager, the system idle process takes up 50-60% of the CPU most pf the time, though I'm not sure if that's right or not.

OK my way would just be to put all data from laptop on external hard drive and reinstall operating system lol seems easy enough to me, saves time messing about solving problems.

also whats the spec of your laptop? maybe a bit more ram may help?

Definitely sounds like lack of ram. At a guess this is 512Mb.

You could benefit from optimizing too. Things like ctfmon doesn't need to startup, as does lightscribe (unless you use that everyday), office agent, messenger. If you don't use them 24/7 don't load them at startup. Load them when needed.

Download something like TweakXP / Vista or whatever O/S you are running.

Read guides for turning off unecessary services.

If NTFS turn off last file access stuff.

Turn off drive search indexing (worst "feature" ever for standard users).

Defrag.

Remove Temp Files and limit Temp Internet File space to 50Mb.

Syetem idel process doesnt use the cpu is shows how much is free i think, so that means you've got something using 40-50% of your cpu.

Have a look at other processes that are using a lot of cpu.
