Has been doing it for the last hour or so having been fine for the last 1 and a half years!

Battery is plugged in and also laptop is switched on at the mains, so that rules that out.

I'm in safe mode at the moment and it seems fine so far, so can I rule out hardware as well?

whats the make and model, its possibly over heating by the sounds of it.

it's an acer aspire 7520.

it's been switched off for a good couple of hours now so i'll try it again...

...nope, still borked. got as far as windows repair and then it switched off again :(

oh...it switched off in safe mode too just after i posted my original message!

is there any hot air coming out the vent at all, does it sound likes its whizzing away but very little air flow? if so its probably blocked and needs a good clean.

I've got the same problem with one of the kids laptops, a Lenovo 3000. What's the best way to clean it out - does it need to be taken apart or can it be blown through with some compressed air ?

If it's not down to overheating what else would cause it - faulty mobo perhaps ? As this chap it's not BSOD or anything just completely shutting off with no warning..

compressed air is the first option but if the fluff on the fins has clumped up rather than just dust build up in might need opening up to pull it out, if its accessable through a panel on the back its not too big a job but if there's no panel it might need stripping which is not difficult but does require a bit of patience and care with the dissassembling, you might be able to find a guide online on how to do this.

I had mine looked at by my local computer repair shop and it was beyond repair sadly. The fan wasn't all that dusty, so something elsewhere gave way.

Had to get a new laptop which is not ideal when my wife is expecting our first baby next week!

Sorry to hear that, did they say exactly what the problem was ?

Mine has been fixed by replacing the battery, the old one was completely gone - not holding any charge at all
