Slightly odd one, so hoping for a few clues.

Friend has asked me to take a look at his laptop (acer 5532) as it has a faulty keyboard. the 5,% key no longer works and it looks like it has a sticking key as when the laptop is booting it give off loads of beep as if the keyboard buffer is full. There also a clue in that the password window is always full off dots..

So I ordered up a replacement keyboard and installed it. No more beeping pre-boot and system starts. Password box now clear. But the majority of the keys on the keyboard don't function and those that do appear to be mapped to the wrong keys G=3, etc.

Any ideas?

What's most likely, that the Fleabay replacement keyboard is faulty. Fleabay £13 made in China cheapy. (Genuine are £35) or could it be that the keyboard decoder has died in the laptop?

I've replace several tired and worn keyboards before but never come across one like this. I've done the obvious, re-seated the ribbon, cleaned it with IPA. It still does the same.

Cheers

Is numlock on?

Key mapping is off it's head so can't say for sure 6 gives S from the numeric pad!!!

Ribbon cable not seated correctly?

Checked and double checked, I've cleaned the ribbon cable and connector itself with IPA. I've had the ribbon under the eye glass and it looks like all pins have correctly inserted (I can see marks on the ribbon where the connector has made contact and burnished the finish)

I've not seen it for years and years, I have known keyboard encoders fail at work. Just hope it's not that.

Anyway I've had a little trawl of Fleabay and found another replacement keyboard that lists compatibility with the Laptop and sub-part number for the keyboard. (first one was lappy only) It's only £11 so have taken a flyer on it. Genuine Acer replacement is £35+ so I just wanted to save me mate a few quid.
