How do I stop my desktop moving to my external monitor (my TV) when I close the lid of my laptop? I have it dual-screened at the moment and I can use monitor 2 fine with the lid up, but when I close it my desktop, icons, start bar all move to the second screen.

It only seems to do it randomly too. Some times I can close the lid and whatever I'm watching on the second screen will stay there.

I just can't work out what triggers this.

it coz your laptop is sleeping when u close it and is using the 2nd screen as the only screen if u want the 1fist screen off just change the britness down or download an application to sleep your laptop screen (google ***) or if u need to close your lid and keep it running (might be bad for heat) find a program that will stop your notebook sleeping (google again)

My laptop isn't sleeping or hibernating, it just switches screens. I could turn the brightness down but it's still on. I don't really want to use an external application because I know my laptop can manage being closed while running stuff on the external monitor.

Easy. This works for me:

Control Panel - Power Options - Advanced Tab.

Set "When I close the lid of my portable computer" to "do nothing".

In default it's either Hibernate or Standy By.

Should do exactly what you are looking for.
