I have not been in the market for a laptop for about 10 years so could you recommend me a make/model?

Budget is upto £500 but some spare change would be nice. But it needs to last a few years.

Just general school work for a teenager, internet viewing and maybe the odd movie.

Thanks for the advice in advance.

For home laptop, there are a few choices.

Samsung R530 i3-330M.
HP G62 i3-330M.
Toshiba Satellite L650.
And maybe some Acer with dedicated graphics as well.

I'd have a look at your local retail stores, they probably have a few on display that you can check out. Then you can get some reviews of the models and configs on the internet.

I'd go with i3-300M for processor, 3 gigs minimum, win 7, wifi b/g/n, and maybe bluetooth as extra. The rest is up to you really (keyboard and trackpad feel, screen, ...), but the HP and Sammy look well built.

If the price is right at the store, might be better to purchase there, or order online and collect at the store. Don't go for Advent or some other cheap cr*p, but stick to the manufacturers above, as well as maybe Asus, Dell and Lenovo.

If you want a ultra-mobile laptop, it's a whole new ball game.

If willing to go refurbished route can also grab yourself a bargain on Dell Outlet. Although you may have to keep an eye on it for a few weeks to get a really good one.

I have the Toshiba Satellite Pro L650 which is the same as the Satellite but has a dedicated graphics card and it's a lovely machine. The only downside is that the speakers could be better but they're OK. Excellent with headphones however. Great build quality and nice finish as well.

You might have some luck with the aspire/compaq notebooks priced under $400. I ran mine into the ground, but I'm a power user and never should have abused it the way I did (I had a compaq). The poor thing hung in there for 4 years tho...
