Looking to buy a laptop purely for the sole purpose of uni work. So will only be running MS Office.

I was thinking of a budget between £300-£400.

Ive found 2 models so far, but not sure on the makes of them
Acer and Compaq/HP!

Anyone have any recommendations for me? Ive looked on overclockers for some, but they dont seem to offer anything that suits me in my budget.

Thanks

I just bought the Dell 13z (see the thread) mainly for Uni work.

It's perfect for me - good performance, battery life and not too bulky to take into Uni. A little over your budget, but well worth it imo.

Ive been looking at the dell range, and they look perfect, could pick on in red that the girlfriend would love.

But the chips arent the best bog standard tbh, and you have to pay through the roof for dual core.

Netbook to take to lectures, proper desktop for at home. I had a laptop for a year but got annoyed with the lack of power/flexibility when I didn't have to carry it anywhere. Netbook+Desktop is the best combo imo.

I think ive decided that its going to be a laptop, as netbook + desktop is too costly, and my toshiba laptop i have was excellent for when I was at uni.

Right so i think ive whittled it down to 2.

Keep your eye out on dells website this week. Theres the Dell Deals happening at the mo, picked up an i7 720, 1080p screen 15.6 screen, 4GB 1333mhz ram, 320gb 7200rpm, 1gb ati 5470 gpu with a backlit keyboard for £690. It's a bargain. That sorta spec PC is around £1000 anywhere else, prob worth the 3week wait too... they have other stuff, the firts 2 days of the dell deals were for the mini dell machines/netboooks.

keep checking the dell website, and the deals are very good, but the chips are also very poor. My budget only really allows for a celeron dual core from dell for 380 and i can get AMD dual core X2 Compaq laptop for 358

I usually find the pcpro A-List helpful.

They seem a bit above budget but maybe some lower spec options are available.

OR

Get a netbook and then use a separate keyboard and screen when at home. Samsung n130 is decent enough for office applications.

OR

Second hand. Get something really tatty from somewhere and then upgrade hdd and RAM to give it a speed boost.
