Hi my neighbor has just asked me to have a look at his laptop for him.
Its not booting in to windows, it gets to the XP loading screen then just as it is about to go into windows the screen goes black then restarts itself.

I have tryed doing last known config and safe mode but still nothing.
But when i put my windows disc in to try and repair it that way it was saying no hard drives detected.

I then went into the bios and there was an option to do a hard disk self test, but when i do that it says #1- 07 Fail.

The laptop is a HP Pavilion with intel centrino Duo, 1 gig ram, windows xp home.

Is there anyway to recover whats on the drive? or does anyone have a idea whats wrong? any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

If you press F8 during boot and select the option to not auto restart on error you will get a blue screen of death with some sort of error code. Post that up and we may be able to assist further.

you will more than likely have to recover the data using a usb caddy and copy what you need to another pc/laptop. the fail status is pretty reliably on those bios selftests so you're looking at replacement drive time.

Thanks for the replys but ive sorted it i managed to connect the hard drive up to my pc and do a error check on it and so far it is ok :)
