I am trying to fix my friend's laptop.

He wanted me to get rid of all the malware that was on it, which I did by uninstalling the different programmes but for some reason now it won't connect to the internet.

It connects to the modem and looks fine, but when I open the web browser it says page can not be displayed.

I have looked on the net but nothing is working.

Any ideas?

Disabled proxy settings, tried with a static ip and without and ping says 'could not find host'.

Sorry I'm not 'excellent' with computers so might not understand some things :)

Have you checked to see if the dependency service has been started?

How about trying to create a new user account on the laptop and trying the net from there? That way you can narrow it down to the users profile if it has been infected heavily.

We're going to need some more info dude.

So what IP address has he been assigned? Does network show as limited connectivity? I presume it's the same for wired and wireless connections?

IP is 192.168.1.62, it is same for wired and wireless and it says the connection is perfect, just says 'page cannot be displayed' in the browser.

IP sounds like a normal home network IP.

What are the DNS servers set to? Does it make a difference if you manually set the DNS to 8.8.8.8?

I presume other devices on the network work with no issues?

Is the machine able to obtain an IP address?
Can the machine ping the router?
Can the machine ping 8.8.8.8?

Yes for all :)

Is it possible that I might have uninstalled something valuable when I was clearing out he malware?

I doubt it as I usually can sort things out fine but that is when it stopped working.
