Laptop not powering up - broken DC input or something else?

I was using my HP laptop on my lap, put it to one side, and when I returned it was no longer working. It has no power, no lights on, and will not switch on.

My immediate thought was that it must be the DC input as they are easily broken. However, having given it some more thought, if that was the case, the laptop could have continued to work on battery power.

So my question is, would a broken DC input stop the laptop from powering on completely, even on battery power?

If not, any suggestions as to what may be the cause, or how to diagnose it, would be welcome.

Thank you in advance for any response.

Assuming you haven't already fixed this, have you tried removing battery and power and holding in the power button for 60 seconds then release. Then put just ac connector in and try and power back up.

Thank you for your reply. I had already fixed it by then, doing more or less exactly what you suggested! I disconnected the battery and the power supply, held the power button for around 30 seconds, and reconnected them both. The laptop then worked again and has been fine ever since. No idea what caused the problem, but I'm happy it was easily fixed in the end!
