I have an old Elitebook 8560W at work which i use to have my own software on, and as a unlocked PC so i have come back to the office after working from home for a month and this laptop has done a small windows update and now only works on an external monitor once windows has loaded. When i start up the laptop i breifly get the BIOS boot options, then the windows Logo and spinner. then the laptop screen goes blank (regardless of whether an external screen is plugged in) . So i am a bit stuffed how to resolve this. Windows 10 shows that i have 2 displays set to duplicate, If i set to laptop only then i will cut my own branch off and see nothing. So if anyone has any ideas please let me know.

I just had a thought , maybe something has gone wrong with the settings for when the lid is closed.... i will try and change it tomorrow to "do nothing"

Can you update drivers, or do you not have permissions? I would start setting your screen to duplicate, then extend and see where that gets you.

I had a slightly more updated version and it could be a nightmare with multiple screens. When you look at your display settings, what does it show for your laptop screen? Is it showing the correct resolution and refresh rate?

Can you force it into safe mode?

the screen is on duplicate, and extended will lose a screen and thats where the dialogue box shoots off too, so i leave it to time out and revert, with no external screen you get nothing past windows logo. I will try the Lid thing tommorrow . its possible lid sensor isnt working

System Restore your laptop to before the Windows update to see if thats the problem. Its not going to resolve it if it updates again but its going to give you an indication.

Could disable updates.

Its def a microsoft update or related. Ive jut booted from Linux Mint and it works fine on bother monitors

unintalled all january updates didnt change anything, next updates are octobers and it was working before in december anyway. i rebooted in safe mode and that works as well

So im not yet sure if this is hardware or windows but i have narrowed the fault down to the windows 10 brightness control. I removed the Power cord and the screen works. i plug the power in and the screen goes off... So when on battery i dropped the brighteness to 50% plugged laptop in and fine. cranked it up and it works on 95% any further then the screen goes off. So microsoft may have fluffed about with the brigthness tool. The screen isnt very bright either but that could be as its quite old... but i think this windows 10 control is messing it up... the laptop shortcuts dont work i think they must be soft controls rather than hard coded

Iirc my old laptop has drivers and what not that needed updated to get the hot keys (likevolume and brightness) working on windows. I can’t remember it fell under being a keyboard driver or whether it was part of the general utilities apps and drivers for the laptop.
I know you have checked the gpu drivers but have you updated everything else including the utilities that are available for the laptop from the manufacturer support site?
