So dvd burner on IBM R50e wont close due to the kids breaking it. Would I need an IBM one or would any latop one work. Theres on on OCUK for £28 would that work?

I would say yes, but knowing IBM I'd reduce that to a 'probably'...

whats the actual make model of the drive in device manager, most laptop drives are all the same fitting, sometimes they come in a caddy which is a couple of screws but the bare drives are the same, the front bezel may differ from make to make but most new ones use a universial fitting, if its just a standard flat bezel and not shaped it should be fine.

can anyone find a pic of the connector on the back of this drive?
i know it ide, but i guess its a mini version?

just took one for you

standard ide laptop connnector it has pins on the top and bottom edge that you can't see.

Glad you posted that mine looks nothing like that!

Looking around seems your right about the caddy thing now just have to find it again (bloody kids) as a replacement seems to be £100+ which is way OTT seeing the laptop was £320 new (not discounted/clearance)

a standard drive will fit in the caddy.
