Laptop or ipad?

Hello guys,
I am looking to buy a gadget for £400(no more than £450)
My family wants a Ipad 4th generation, but i want a windows laptop with dvd writer, 500 hardrive, touchscreen.
Could you point me the diferrences and that all?
also i will use for games(i could play temple run with bluestacks)

Can do a lot less on an ipad.
But then it is the far better form factor for general use.

Have you thought about a middle ground, like the acer w510(32agb wifi)/w511(64GB, wifi, 3G)
Dual core atom so can do desktop stuff and keyboard that doubles the battery to over 18hours. but still can't game on it, other than tablet games, due to lack of any gfx grunt.

You and your family want totally different things.

Tablets are so so so so much better when sat around or out and about. But obviously have their limitations. Where laptops far more flexible and powerful but are no good for sitting around or out and about, especially if you've used a tablet before.
