Laptop or telly?

Hi.
Im thinking of buying something, either a laptop or a telly.

The laptop would be to replace my Thinkpad Z60M, and the one im looking at, a Dell M1330, whilst smaller lighter and more powerful, ive got my doubts over its usefulness for typing on it.
Plus the fact that im none to keen on using it at work where i spend 90% of my team. It'd basically be one i'd use around the house when im home when i cant be bothered with my main PC.

The telly would be a 42"+ jobbo to replace my 26" Sammy.
Purpose? I'd like true 1080p and 24p processing, a bigger screen so i can enjoy games/films more, and an excuse to get a blueray player. :p.

Both would roughly come to the same price.

Thoughts?

Im not more excited over either tbh.
I like the looks/features i can get from a M1330, it looks cool, its high specced, and could come in useful.

The telly would be good also, but i'd want one with very specific specifications, and no doubt the larger size would heat up my very small room even faster than my current 26".

I was just browsing through a catalogue, and finally found the perfect telly
Its 1080p. It does 100hz. It does 24p. And its a good size:
sony bravia kdl-40d3500u
Browsing around the net can see it on sale for £800. £400 cheaper than i was willing to go. :D.
##EDIT##
Just looked further, can get for £700!

Only problem is, that with the Telly, DVDs are watched through my PC as my DVD player plays things out of sync, and my PC is pretty noisy.
And at the moment, bar MP3 which im about to complete, i have no games to play on said telly.

Basically both options have large disadvanges and are more of 'want' purchases rarther than 'need' purchases.

is 24p really that important?
Yes.
Also, the 40V3000 is available as a package with the 20S3000 lcd FOR £899 plus delivery with a 3 year warranty, which is excellent value, you can get John Lewis to pricematch that so can get a 5 year warranty.
Why would i want 2 TVs though?
Plus, the KDL-40V3000 doesnt have the 100hz option.

My m1330:

£615
2GB RAM
T7500 processor
160GB HDD
LED screen
8400GS graphics
9 cell battery
Dunno where you got that from but M1330s are no where near that price.
The base one alone is £579, and thats without the 9 cell battery and LED screen. So theres +150ish.
Plus, you cant get M1330s with the T7500 according to the dell website.

The one i was looking at:
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T5550 (1.83 GHz)
Windows Vista® Home Premium
Base Warranty - 1 Year XPS Premium Hardware Support
Tuxedo Black & 0.3 mega pixel Camera for White-LED Display
13.3" UltraSharp™ WXGA (1280x800) White-LED Display (300 nits) with TrueLife™
Biometric Fingerprint Reader
4096MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x2048]
160GB Free Fall Sensor (7200RPM) Hard Drive
128MB nVidia® GeForce® 8400M GS edit
8x DVD+/-RW Slim Slot Load Drive
Primary 6-cell Lithium-Ion Battery (56 WHr)
Dell™ TrueMobile 355 internal Bluetooth Module
Dell™ Wireless 1505 Wireless-N Mini-Card - Europe
65W AC Adapter edit

And that comes to £944.37

It's just an option considering your original budget was over 1k. The 100hz is also over rated, check out avforums for comparisons, the concensus seems to be with the 40V over the 40D
Maybe, but the reviews ive read seem to think that the 100hz is better for normal telly with fast moving stuff & the 24p is great for films.
Thats not to say that i have only the Sony as the only choice there though.
I quite like the look of those ones with the ambilight feature as well...

That plasma TV looks good, but its not a proper HD set, its only 1024 according to the spec sheets i can find.

look in the laptop section. people in there have gotten GREAT deals by haggling with dell salespeople on the phone. some people have had loads knocked off
True. I ordered the other half a 1525 and managed to get them to knock the delivery price off. :p.
Still doesnt get round the fact that the 1330s cant be gotten with the T7500s, according to dell. ;) :p. Unless they've recently changed their spec listings?.

100hz means nothing and is just something to entice people, and i have to say there is no such thing as 'proper HD'.
Its not just a marketing term though, it actually does make a difference.
My mate has some toshiba 32" with 100hz, and the difference in a lot of stuff compared to my sammy 26", especially on fast moving stuff that isnt DVD is quite noticable.
Plus, there is such a thing as proper HD. I like to call it a panel with 1920x1080 resolution. ;).
Bottom line is that if i buy a new telly, Plasma or LCD, i will want it to have 1080p resolution, 24p & 100hz. I want to upgrade my telly in all ways. Going to a 1024 screen from the current 1366 one isnt an upgrade.
If the difference isnt there as you say in, then theres no harm in having it is there? ;):p.

What distance will you be sitting from your tv ?
My eye level will be about 2-2.5meters from the center of the screen, looking upwards slightly due to the seating position. Ive looked at tellys in various shops, and stood about that far away. I recon 42" is about the minimum, 47" ideal, and 52" would be like a cinema, with all my view filled by the screen.
But ive been wrong with those sort of estimates before...:p
