I have a laptop that has gotten a bit messed up so I decided to restore it using the recovery disks. The disks appear to have become corrupt/have a file missing from them. Is it possible to use a windows retail disk and use the product key from the bottom of the laptop to recover it?

Isn't it sometime dependant on the CD key type i.e. if it's a OEM CD it'll need OEM media or was that system scrapped long ago?

Just been reading up on this and theres mixed views as to whether and oem key will need an oem disk. Anyone got any other opinions

It's dependant on the operating system? What is it?

If it's Windows 7. Then yes you can use the retail dvd with an OEM license (sticker on laptop) However, you will need to use the activation by phone method. It's really easy. Takes 2 mins and it's also free.

If it's XP. You will require an OEM disc.
